Buddha Has Lost His Head

The steers knocked Buddha around one too many times and he has lost his head. Well, not lost it, but it's not where it's supposed to be.

Wouldn't it be great if something just as earth shattering could be met with such a serene smile?

Last Glimpses of Fall

Although today is absolutely gorgeous and we should have a high in the 60's, tomorrow comes the cold weather, in the 30's and 40's with lows in the teens.

So here is a last hurrah for fall before all the leaves freeze and fall off the trees.

Buddha Tree and Fall Sky
The Buddha waits patiently for winter. Nothing bothers the Buddha.

During these fall days the afternoon sun is warm and it's fun to sit up among the rocks, watching the traffic go by. Once there were three trucks in 15 minutes!

Lately, most of the traffic watching involves turkeys. It's hunting season, but so far they have been spared. Why, I want to know, are the turkeys in our yard? They should be hiding!

That long porch on the cabin's south side will be the go-to spot when it is cold but sunny. Already the sun is low enough to shine inside, making it so warm I need to open a window. I'm not complaining, though, because Our Mr. Sun will be helping to keep the place warm in just a few days.

I think fall is my favorite season, at least right now it is.

Nippy and Sunny

This post's title sounds like a comedy duo I might have seen on the Ed Sullivan Show when I was a kid, but really, it's about the weather. Warmer than usual here like much of the country, we have our cold mornings, around 15-20 degrees F or so, and if the sun stays out, temps rise into the 40's or 50's.

For you folks born to cold weather, 40 or 50 probably sounds incredibly balmy, and we, too, are beginning to appreciate how "warm" it is. Hell, that's sweater weather!

Last night it snowed Dippin' Dots and when I forced gently carried Miss Bonnie outside so she would have her morning cat excursion, the round pellets on our wooden deck crunched.

Here's what it looks like from the deck, just before the sun peeks over the rim rock.

Looks frigid, doesn't it? And it is, around 16 F this morning.

This is looking toward the Buddha tree circle. Buddha, way at the top of the path, doesn't seem worried about the cold.

Have you been watching Lillyhammer on Netflix? I just saw the first episode and watching it made me realize cold is relative. Norway is freaking cold. If you are from Norway, let me know if I'm right about this one.

I know two buddies who aren't inconvenienced by the weather, as long as they are inside. Let's name them Nippy and Sunny.

That quilt is a shredded mess. I should make a new one. Yeah. Put it on the list.

Relax and Restore

When people visit, they usually comment on how peaceful it is. Unless Tom is driving around in the Polaris or chainsawing, the sounds outside are those of nature.

Wind blows through the pines, birds tweet, hummingbirds hum and the creek riffles over the rocks. Turkeys gobble and a coyote off in the distance yips, thinking about possible turkey dinner. And that's about it.

A good place to hear these natural sounds is at the Buddha Garden. The previous owners left him here and I am happy to have him stay. Let's walk up to visit him.

The red hot poker plant blooms just inside the wall.

Outside is a cobblestone path that Ernest built.

The Buddha garden is surrounded by oak trees, so it's a shady, contemplative place.

I like to sit on the bench, reading, occasionally looking at Buddha, who's just taking it easy.

This is what Buddha sees. The air is smoky today because of fires.

Yesterday The Angus Boys were chilling up here, too.

It's a place to recharge your batteries.

Think about a future blue and green quilt, with a smidgen of white.

Before you head back home.

The Buddha says thanks for visiting.
